11 Postpartum “Extras” I Thought I Didn’t Need (But Totally Did!)

When you’re preparing for a new baby, the list of “must-haves” can feel endless, and it’s easy to dismiss certain items as unnecessary luxuries or things you can do without. However, ask any experienced mom, and she’ll likely have a list of “extras” she initially overlooked but later found to be surprisingly indispensable during her postpartum recovery. 1. A Dedicated “Nursing/Feeding Station” Caddy

I thought I’d just grab what I needed, but having a caddy stocked with snacks, a water bottle, nipple cream, burp cloths, your phone, and a remote right next to you during those long feeding sessions is pure gold. It saves so much “Can you grab me…?”

2. Multiple Reusable Water Bottles with Straws

Sure, one water bottle is fine, right? Wrong. You’ll be incredibly thirsty, especially if breastfeeding, and having several filled and strategically placed around the house (and one that’s easy to drink from while holding a baby) makes staying hydrated so much easier.

3. Seriously Dark-Colored Towels and Sheets

I underestimated the mess factor of postpartum life. Having a few old or dark-colored towels and even a spare set of dark sheets specifically for the first week or two saved my nicer linens and a lot of stress.

4. A Small Bedside Bassinet or Co-Sleeper (Even if Planning for a Crib)

Even if your long-term plan is a crib in the nursery, having baby right by your bed in a safe sleep space for those first few weeks makes middle-of-the-night feedings and check-ins infinitely easier when you’re exhausted and sore.

5. Easy, One-Handed Snacks (Pre-Portioned)

You’ll be hungry, and often, you’ll only have one hand free. I thought I’d just “make something,” but pre-portioned granola bars, nuts, cheese sticks, or cut fruit that require zero prep were lifesavers.

6. A White Noise Machine (for YOU, not just baby)

While great for baby, a white noise machine in my room helped me tune out little baby grunts and rustles (once I knew they were safe) so I could actually get some deeper sleep during those precious quiet moments.

Your phone becomes a lifeline for entertainment during cluster feeds, a timer, a way to connect with the outside world. A short cable that tethers you to the wall is incredibly frustrating; an extra-long one is a small luxury you’ll appreciate.

8. A Comfortable, Supportive Robe (That You Don’t Mind Getting Messy)

I had nice pajamas, but a cozy robe I could throw on quickly over anything (or nothing) for warmth, coverage when visitors came, and that I wasn’t precious about getting spit-up on was used constantly.

9. Dry Shampoo (Even if You’re Not Usually a Fan)

Showering can feel like a monumental task. Dry shampoo became my best friend for feeling slightly more human on days when a proper wash just wasn’t happening.

10. Disposable Postpartum Underwear (Beyond the Hospital Mesh)

The hospital mesh undies are functional, but having a pack of comfortable, disposable adult diaper-style underwear for the first week was surprisingly more secure and less messy than dealing with giant pads in regular underwear. Less laundry, too!

It sounds silly, but when you finally get the baby (and yourself) to sleep, the last thing you want is an unexpected doorbell or knock. A simple, polite sign can be a sanity-saver.
